Thailand: Ao Nang/Jouney to Ko Lanta

Thailand was completely amazing.  We stayed in the South to focus on the beach for the maximum amount of relaxing we could do; we've done the sort of trip where you stay in one place for a day and spend half the time on night busses to get the maximum amount of sights but this was not that trip.  Clementine was safe and sound at home with Anders and Malia.

We flew into Krabi (a little more expensive than Bangkok but worth what we saved in travel time because we only wanted to go to the beach) by way of a red-eye through Kuala Lumpur.  Our first stop was a town called Ao Nang.

Victory beers while we wait to check in to our room.

Walking to the beach.

Hello Cat.

Beach!!!!  yay!!!  Red-eye felt like it was no thing at all once we arrived here.

More yay!!!  I've been working out five times a week in recent months attempting to get more healthy after having Clementine.  I am very proud of my hard work and was ready to wear a bikini for most of the trip.

We swam in the ocean for a while before wandering around and having dinner.  Pretty much everything we ate in Thailand was cheap and delicious.

Ao Nang was ok but we didn't need to stay longer than a day.  Our next stop was an island called Ko Lanta and to get there we had to take a van, wait at a bus station, get on another van, get on a ferry, and then drive to where we stayed.  Someone said it would take 2-3 hours but I think it was closer to 4-5.

All the cars we drove in had flowers hanging from the mirror.

This house is awesome.

We waited at this bus station for 45 minutes.

Alec loves the Economist while we are traveling.  They said to just sit and wait and we'll tell you when you're leaving (everyone had stickers with their destination).  A bunch of people loaded into a bus but no one said anything to us, so we thought "Uhhh maybe we should get on that bus."  It left by the time Alec found someone to ask and the lady said oh yeah, you should be on it, so the bus turned around and picked us up.  Exciting story, very glad we paid attention.

I asked the driver why he had the flowers and he said "because they are nice."

Here's our driver.  I got stuck in the front seat for the three hour drive and this dude was super chatty.  He spoke English pretty well but I still wasn't quite sure what he was saying for most of the drive.  He told me about life in Thailand, cell phone corruption, the coup that happened recently and government corruption, his friend who died recently, what tourists are like, what employment prospects are like in the area, etc etc.  We exchanges pictures of our kids and he told me that Thai women don't leave their home until they are married, and then they stay at home with the kids.

Finally we arrive at the ferry!

Isn't Alec's beard nice and full?  My brother Zach told him he looks like a pile of hair and Alec's Grandfather Graeme said he looks like a Muslim terrorist.

On to Fisherman's Cottage in Ko Lanta.  (I told the driver where we were staying and he kept calling it Fisherman's Contest.)

  1. And your momma thinks sweet Alec-half-a-beer looks like Jesus. There's nothing like that feeling of traveling forevvvvvvver and finally getting to your destination and sitting down for the victory cocktail.
